University of Oregon - Opera Theater Program  (Video Excerpts)

UO Opera at Symphony Space (NYC)
UO Opera Theater at Symphony Space
During the 2007 - 2008 Season, I was invited to join the faculty of the University of Oregon School of Music in Eugene.  As Interim Director of the Opera Workshop, my job was to advance the program while preparing it for transition into the hands of a long-term director for the program.  My priorities were focused on graduating Seniors, Masters candidates and Doctoral students who were heading into the job market with little thought to 'what comes next'.  I spent the year rekindling old relationships with Arts collaborators, setting up apprenticeships and opportunities for the students that would continue after my departure.  After taking excerpts of the program on tour to locations around Oregon and to Symphony Space in New York, we returned to Eugene in May, 2008 for two performances.  Presented and co-sponsored by the Eugene Opera, these performances comprised the evening titled, Faces of Love.

The operas in one act featured on the program are: Broken Pieces (Daron Hagen, music / Barbara Gorecki, libretto); The Telephone (Gian Carlo Menotti, music & libretto), The Ruined Maid (Seymour Barab, music & libretto) directed by graduate student, Catherine Olson, and The Face on the Barroom Floor (Henry Mollicone, music / John S. Bowman, libretto).  Solo performances for the evening included: a monologue on video dating, leading into Vanilla Ice Cream from She Loves Me (Jerry Bock, music / Sheldon Harnick, libretto), The Alto's Lament (Marcy Heisler and Zina Goldrich) and Nothing Left to Give (words and music by Kelsey Chun Hoeffel).  Invited to join the Eugene performances were two popular (and now, nationally known) student groups who, though sponsored loosely by the University, had never been presented on a program by the School of Music.  As faculty sponsor to another of the other young a cappella groups, I was delighted that ON THE ROCKS and DIVISI were represented as voices of the University of Oregon.
